Chapter 12

Rub-a-dub-dub, Merlin swam in the tub
while Scottie took his bath.
Sally cooked their dinner
while best friends splashed and laughed.
“Quack,” Merlin made it clear,
did you wash behind both ears?

Merlin preened his feathers,
yes, each and every one
and Scottie, wrinkled like a prune,
was having lots of fun.
And then from in the other room
Sally called out, “Dinner’s done.”

“Quack?” Merlin asked as he and Scottie took their places at Sally’s huge dinner table made of genuine hard rock sugar candy.

“Lollipop stew,” Sally answered. “Do you like lollipop stew?”

“We’ve never had lollipop stew,” Scottie exclaimed.

“Quack,” Merlin agreed.

“Is it good?” Scottie asked.

“I think it’s good,” Sally answered as she placed the first bowl in front of Merlin. “Here, taste it and see if you like it.”

“QUACK, QUACK, QUACK!” Merlin shouted, flapping his wings after tasting the lollipop stew.

“I knew you would like it,” Sally smiled. “Here, Scottie, you try some too.”

Upon tasting his first spoonful Scottie proclaimed, “This lollipop stew is the best thing I’ve ever tasted.” And with that he quickly started spooning down bite after bite.

“Slow down,” Sally warned, “you can’t fill-up on lollipop stew, you have to leave room for the refried beans.”

“Quack?”

“Yes, Merlin,” Sally said, “you have to try them too.”

“But Merlin and I don’t like refried beans,” Scottie complained.

“Not even refried jelly beans?” Sally asked.

“Refried jelly beans?” Scottie asked. “We’ve never tried refried jelly beans, are they as good as lollipop stew?”

“I think refried jelly beans are better than lollipop stew,” Sally answered as she served the first bowl to Merlin.

“QUACK, QUACK, QUACK!” Merlin shouted. I guess you know what he meant.
