Chapter 15

Vrrroom, vrroom, the mufflers roared
as Sally sped towards town,
the sidecar filled with hot dogs
the three pulled from the ground.
While up above, young Merlin flew,
this time, to lead the way,
the box on Scottie’s shoulder
where it seemed to want to stay.

Beep, beep, the horn it beeped
as Sally passed the cars,
and with each car she’d pass
she’d leave it back so far--
so far behind they’d not catch up
before they got to town.
Scottie, Merlin, and a hopping box
with a new friend they had found.

“Here we are,” Sally said as she brought the motorcycle and its hot dog sidecar to a stop right where she had stopped the day before, “and I’ve plenty of time to get everything set up before my first customers arrive.”

“You need us to help set up?” Scottie asked just as Merlin made another perfect landing on top of the sidecar.

“No, but thanks anyway,” Sally said as she turned toward where Merlin had perched. “It’s really quite easy. Hop down, Merlin, I need to open my box, okay?”

“Quack,” Merlin answered as he hopped to the ground.

“What are you going to do today?” Sally asked.

“I guess we’ll wait on the bench for the man to come back.” Scottie said.

“Why don’t you go to the movies?” Sally asked. “I hear they’re playing a really good Donald Duck movie. Do you like Donald Duck, Merlin?”

“Quack!” Merlin excitedly replied. I’m sure you know what he meant.

“We don’t have five dollars to get in,” Scottie said.

“That’s too bad,” Sally said, “Perhaps I could lo...”

Just then the hopping box hopped from Scottie’s shoulder and began hopping frantically in circles all around them. “What’s going on with the hopping box?” Sally asked. “Is something wrong?”

“I donno, I think it must...” but before Scottie finished his sentence the hopping box opened its lid and dumped a crisp new five dollar bill on the ground at Scottie’s feet. “Wow!”

“Are you going to pick it up?” Sally asked.

“Do you think I should?”

“Quack!”

“Well Merlin thinks you should,” Sally said, “and so do I.”
